High Elf's longbow

One arrow, one goblin, one less throat to slit in the dark.

The High Elf's longbow is the signature ranged weapon of the elf who serves as the archer in the Goblin Slayer's party. Crafted to the precise measurements of her frame and honed through generations of elven marksmanship tradition, it is a slender, high-tension bow designed for lethal accuracy at extended range. In the gritty, mud-and-blood world of Goblin Slayer, where goblin swarms close in fast and melee is often the only option, that longbow represents a rare and precious advantage: the ability to thin enemy numbers before they ever reach the party's front line.

The bow is not merely a weapon but an extension of the High Elf's identity. Where the Goblin Slayer relies on brute-force traps, the Priestess on holy magic, and the Sword Maiden on close-quarters steel, the elf's longbow anchors the party's tactical depth. Every arrow loosed is a calculated risk, a moment of silence in the chaos, and a reminder that the party can fight on multiple axes at once.

Lore & Background

In the world of Goblin Slayer, elves are a proud and somewhat insular race, their long lifespans and cultural traditions setting them apart from the human majority. Archery is not simply a combat skill among elves; it is a discipline passed down through lineages, a meditative art that demands years of silent repetition before a string is ever drawn in anger. The High Elf's longbow reflects that heritage. Its limbs are cut from a single piece of seasoned wood, the grain running uninterrupted from tip to tip, and the string is a braided sinew that holds tension without the snap of a cheap leather cord. The geometry is not the broad, heavy draw of a war bow but a sleek, fast release tuned for speed of arrow flight rather than raw punch.

When the High Elf joined the Goblin Slayer's party, her longbow was the one piece of equipment that no one questioned. The Goblin Slayer, a man who trusts nothing he cannot inspect with his own hands, still gave the bow a long, silent look before nodding. In a party built on the principle that every goblin must die before it can scream, the ability to kill at forty paces—before the goblin's war-cry carries to its nest-mates—is not a luxury. It is the difference between a controlled cull and a desperate brawl in a cellar.

The bow has seen its share of mud, blood, and the acrid smoke of goblin campfires. It has been cleaned with oiled cloths in the back of a rented room, re-strung after a limb crack, and carried in a leather sleeve that the High Elf keeps strapped to her back even during rest. To her, the longbow is not a tool. It is a promise made to every elf who ever stood in a forest and let an arrow fly true.

In Their Own Story

The cellar was dark and reeked of wet fur. Three goblins huddled behind a overturned table, clicking their teeth, waiting for the trap to spring. The Goblin Slayer was already moving, oil-soaked rags in his fist, counting heartbeats. The Priestess had her staff raised, a low hum building in her throat. The Sword Maiden's blade was out, edge catching the single shaft of torchlight.

And above them all, the High Elf breathed. Her fingers found the string, felt the wood flex against her palm like a living thing. The nearest goblin turned, ears flattening, sensing the shift in air. The arrow left the string before its eyes could fully track the motion. A soft thud. One less click of teeth in the dark.

She did not smile. She never did. She simply drew again, and the silence in the cellar stretched one heartbeat longer.

Reader's Guide

COMBAT ROLE: The longbow is the party's primary anti-swarm tool at range. Against goblins, which fight in packs of four to eight and close distance quickly, the High Elf's job is to remove two or three from the equation before the melee begins. A well-placed arrow to the eye or throat drops a goblin in one hit; a limb shot slows it enough for the Goblin Slayer's trap to finish the job. Against larger threats—ogres, giant rats, or the rare goblin shaman—the bow shifts to a support role, pinning targets in place or striking exposed joints while the Sword Maiden works the kill.

COSTS AND MAINTENANCE: There is no mana or stamina meter in this world, but the physical toll is real. Drawing a high-tension longbow repeatedly taxes the shoulder and forearm; after a full cull of a goblin nest, the High Elf's arms ache and her fingers bleed through the glove. Arrows are not infinite. A quiver holds roughly two dozen shafts, and each one must be fletched, nocked, and inspected for split fletching before a mission. A lost arrow in a goblin's nest is a small fortune in bone, wood, and time.

The bow itself demands care. The limbs are oiled after every use to prevent the wood from drying and cracking. The string is re-tied when it begins to twist. A cracked limb means the bow is useless until a new one is cut and seasoned, a process that takes weeks. The High Elf carries a spare string and a small whetstone for her nocks in her quiver pouch, and she will not leave a campsite without checking the bow's nocking point.

COUNTER-STRATEGY NOTE: Goblins are small and fast, making them hard to hit at range. The High Elf compensates by shooting at the head and neck, where the target is smallest but a hit is always lethal. She avoids shooting at goblins that are already in the Goblin Slayer's trap radius, trusting his kill to conserve her arrows. If a goblin is behind cover or in a tight corridor, she holds fire and lets the melee team handle it, preserving her quiver for the open-ground engagements where her range advantage is decisive.
