Black Wolf

A shadow with teeth that turns a forest path into a graveyard.

The Black Wolf is a formidable predator in the world of Goblin Slayer, a large wolf-type monster whose dark coat and savage intelligence set it apart from the common grey wolves that haunt the forest edges. Where ordinary wolves are a nuisance to traveling merchants, the Black Wolf is a genuine kill—capable of taking down a low-level adventurer in a single ambush and stripping the flesh from bone before the body goes cold.

It occupies a middle rung in the monster hierarchy: not a legendary beast, but far beyond the goblin or slime that define a rookie's first commission. For the Goblin Slayer's party, encounters with Black Wolves serve as a reminder that the wilderness beyond the goblin problem is still lethal, and that preparation, steel, and nerve are never optional.

Lore & Background

In the bestiaries kept by the Adventurer's Guild, the Black Wolf is catalogued as a wolf-type predator of unusual size and aggression. Its coat ranges from deep charcoal to true black, and its eyes catch lantern-light with an amber glint that veterans learn to associate with imminent violence. Unlike common wolves, which scatter at the sound of a drawn sword, the Black Wolf is described as patient and deliberate, watching from the treeline for hours before committing to a strike. It favors terrain where it can use cover—dense undergrowth, rocky outcrops, the lee of a hillside—so that its approach is silent until the claws are already in the flesh.

Adventurers who survive an encounter often report that the creature does not simply bite and flee. It circles, tests, and goes for the joints: the ankle, the wrist, the gap in a mail shirt. This tactical patience is what separates it from the mindless packs of grey wolves and is the reason the Guild lists it a full tier above common fauna. It is not invulnerable, but it is fast enough that a poorly aimed first swing misses, and in that half-second of hesitation the wolf is already under the armor.

The Black Wolf has no known lair in the traditional sense. It makes temporary dens in hollow trees, rock crevices, or the collapsed remains of old structures, but it is fundamentally a creature of the open. This makes it difficult to track and even harder to bait into a kill zone, a fact that the Goblin Slayer's party has learned the hard way when a lone wolf turned a routine supply run into a fight for survival.

In Their Own Story

The rain had stopped, but the forest floor still wept. The Silver Cleric kept her lantern low, the glow barely reaching the roots of the oaks. She told herself it was just a grey wolf. She told herself that while her hand trembled on the hilt of her mace.

Then the amber eyes opened in the black between the trunks. Not a pair. A single, unblinking point of light, level with her hip, watching. The air went still in a way rain-soaked air never should. She heard the wet click of a jaw unhinging two meters away, in the dark she could not see.

The Goblin Slayer was already moving. He did not shout. He did not need to. The short sword in his hand was already out, already angled, and the sound that followed was the wet, tearing sound of steel meeting sinew. The Black Wolf screamed—a high, ragged shriek that scattered every bird in the canopy—and then it was on the ground, still, its dark fur pooling a darker red.

The Silver Cleric dropped her lantern. It rolled into the mud and went out. In the absolute dark, she could still feel the shape of the thing's claws pressed into her forearm, the four parallel gouges where the mail hadn't been thick enough.

"Next time," the Goblin Slayer said, not looking up from his work, "we bring the torches and the pit."

She nodded. She did not say thank you. She did not need to.

Reader's Guide

The Black Wolf is a serious, focused threat rather than a mindless swarm. It does not come in packs the way grey wolves do; a single specimen is enough to kill an unprepared adventurer, and two is a death sentence for a low-level party. Its defining danger is patience: it will watch, wait, and strike at the moment of least resistance, targeting exposed joints and gaps in armor.

Lair habits are minimal. The Black Wolf is a transient predator, using hollow trees, rock overhangs, or abandoned ruins as temporary dens rather than permanent lairs. It does not hoard or guard treasure. This makes it hard to track—there is no scent trail of a fixed home, no den to surround. It moves through forest and open ground with equal ease, favoring terrain where it can vanish into shadow or undergrowth.

What makes it a specific danger to the Goblin Slayer's party is the combination of speed and tactical choice. A grey wolf bites and runs. The Black Wolf bites, tests, and goes for the kill. It circles to find the weak point, the unarmored limb, the tired fighter at the back of the line. Against the Goblin Slayer's grim, methodical preparation, it is a manageable fight. Against a party that has been walking for six hours with no rest, it is a massacre.

Practical advice from the Guild: never travel alone in dense forest after dark, carry a torch even in daylight to break the silhouette, and if you see amber eyes in the treeline, do not turn your back. The Black Wolf is already deciding which of you it will eat first.
